Health care facilities can be affected by short- or long-term water outages, decreases in water pressure, contamination, and/or sewer backups. Water is critical to many facility functions, from sterilization, laundry, dialysis, and feeding patients and staff, to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) and fire suppression systems. This tip sheet can help health care facility planners prepare for and manage related outages. It is part of the ASPR TRACIE Utility Failures in Health Care Toolkit, which can help health care facility managers and emergency planners identify issues to consider when planning for and responding to various types of utility failures.
