As cases in Washington State began to rise, the Disaster Medical Coordination Center at Harborview Medical Center coordinated with the Northwest Healthcare Response Network to establish a central entity that came to be known as the WMCC. This center anticipates and alleviates strain on hospitals and long-term care facilities by triaging and directing acutely ill patients to acute care hospitals with sufficient capacity. The WMCC has been able to expand response communication across the state and influence future preparedness efforts across the region. As of January 2022, the WMCC has received over 3,800 hospital requests for assistance and has completed nearly 2,000 load-balancing patient placements.
