More than 600 Dead in Spreading Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) Mpox Outbreak as Republic of the Congo Reports its First Cases

The country’s health ministry and the DRC office of the World Health Organization updated those numbers, noting that, for the full year, 14,626 suspected cases were reported, with 654 deaths, for a case-fatality rate (CFR) of 4.5%. On yesterday’s CDC and Infectious Diseases Society of America clinician call, Agam Rao, MD, of the CDC’s US Public Health Service, said that 3,576 suspected mpox cases and 265 deaths have been reported in the DRC through the first 9 weeks of 2024, for an estimated CFR of 7.4%. The reports come as the neighboring Republic of Congo reports its first mpox cases.
