On January 6, 2025, the Louisiana Department of Health reported the unfortunate death of a patient after being hospitalized with severe avian influenza A (H5N1). This was the second case to require critical care support in North America. The other case, which was not fatal, occurred in British Columbia, Canada. Having analyzed specimens collected from the patient in Louisiana, the CDC confirmed the same variant in both cases.
