National Emerging Special Pathogens Training and Education Center (NETEC): Special Pathogen of Concern: Lassa Fever Outbreak in Nigeria (2026 Update)

Lassa fever is endemic in parts of West Africa, where it causes regular seasonal outbreaks. With increasing international travel, including major global events like the upcoming World Cup, there is a greater likelihood of travelers arriving from endemic regions. While imported cases may be rare, the potential for isolated cases in the U.S. increases with global movement. NETEC offers a range of Lassa fever–specific resources to help health care facilities and frontline personnel prepare for and safely manage suspected or confirmed cases.
