Supporting the Needs of Children in a Disaster With a Well-Designed Framework

A well-designed response starts with a clear plan. Region V for Kids supports hospitals and response agencies developing pediatric-focused Concept of Operations (CONOPS) to guide decision-making before, during, and after a disaster.

CONOPS Materials: The Pediatric Disaster Education CONOPS was developed based on a comprehensive review of pediatric disaster education conducted by the Region V for Kids education workgroup. The findings can be found in their white paper report. Support materials include:

  1. Leveling the Playing Field Video: This less than 3-minute narrated video introduces an overarching framework to achieve disaster readiness for infants, children, and youth across disaster disciplines. The content promotes equity and inclusiveness while aligning with the FEMA national disaster framework.
  2. Pediatric Disaster Education Concept of Operations Brief (10-minute read): This 14-page, largely pictorial document provides an overview for stakeholders who wish to learn more about incorporating children into whole-community disaster readiness. The document explains the value of including children in emergency planning and disaster readiness and provides an appendix of pediatric disaster resource topics and links.
