CDC Endorses ACIP Recommendations for Updated COVID-19 Booster

On September 1, CDC Director Rochelle P. Walensky, MD, MPH, released a media statement endorsing CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices’ (ACIP) recommendations for use of updated COVID-19 boosters from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna.

On August 31, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), amended the emergency use authorizations (EUAs) of the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech Bivalent COVID-19 Vaccines. The Moderna COVID-19 vaccine is authorized for use as a single booster dose in individuals 18 years of age and older. The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine is authorized for use as a single booster dose in individuals 12 years of age and older.

In the coming weeks, CDC plans to propose updated COVID-19 boosters for other pediatric groups, following discussion and evaluation of the data by ACIP on September 1. When data are available and FDA authorizes these other types of COVID-19 boosters, CDC will quickly move to help make these vaccines available in the U.S.
