The FBI has issued a FLASH warning about cybercriminals exploiting outdated, unsupported routers—particularly those manufactured in 2010 or earlier—to install proxy services that hide their online activities. These end-of-life devices no longer receive security patches, making them prime targets for malware like a new variant of TheMoon, which infiltrates routers with remote administration enabled. Once infected, these routers are converted into proxies that cyber actors use to anonymously conduct illegal activities such as data theft and cyber fraud. The FBI urges individuals and businesses to replace obsolete routers, apply all available firmware updates, disable remote management settings, and use strong, unique passwords. Signs of infection may include overheating, poor connectivity, or unauthorized setting changes. Victims are advised to report incidents to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center and take steps to secure compromised accounts. For more information, refer to the FBI Public Service Announcement.
