MITRE Introduces New Framework to Secure Embedded Systems

MITRE announced the launch of the Embedded Systems Threat Matrix (ESTM), a cybersecurity framework designed to help protect embedded systems that support critical infrastructure and defense technologies. Developed in collaboration with the Air Force’s Cyber Resiliency Office for Weapon Systems, ESTM is intended to help organizations better understand and defend against cyber threats that specifically target embedded systems. ESTM provides practical tools that enable researchers, vendors, and security professionals to identify vulnerabilities and strengthen embedded systems. It is applicable across multiple sectors, including transportation, energy, healthcare, industrial control systems, and robotics. ESTM organizes tactics and techniques unique to embedded systems and is designed to integrate with existing security programs. The framework also addresses emerging threats and weaknesses to support preparedness for future risks.
